I know we're sharing stories of teachers being brave and having hard conversations but I was a Muslim kid in public school during the early 2000s - there are lots of ways to do this wrong.

Have a plan for something terrible being said, other than shutting down the discussion.
Also a Black and visibly Muslim teacher over the last decade - I spent a lot of time debriefing and holding space for Black and Muslim kids when these brave conversations go off the rails.

Slow down, centre marginalized students, fight the saviour impulse.
I am talking to teachers who teach in diverse communities. I don't know what this looks like in all White spaces.

I am not saying to ignore the issues, I'm just saying *learn* before you attempt to do a hard thing with children - these memories last a long time.
Last thing: I'm not saying these conversations should never happen.

I'm saying teachers are generally NOT trained to have these convos, so GET TRAINING. Read, demand trainings from your admin.

I'm saying the price of fumbling through this is higher than "not doing it right".
