This week we want to give an update on the data available, but also an insight into why we are currently in a national lockdown.

We know you’re feeling fed up with being asked to restrict your behaviour. Because cases in Sheffield are lower than elsewhere in the UK, it’s tempting to say that stricter measures aren’t justified.
However, the number of cases alone don’t tell the whole story.

We’re concerned about the reliability of the data - we don’t know if the Christmas break has meant fewer people have been to get tested.
Our most accurate data is also 7 days old - this puts our rate at 270 per 100k of population - which is very high and increasing.

Hospital capacity in Sheffield has not recovered since November’s lockdown.

An increase in cases inevitably means an increase in hospitalisations.
Most people don’t need hospital treatment, but some of those who do stay in hospital for a long time.
This means hospital capacity recovers much slower after cases have dropped off.
If hospitals exceed capacity, then this affects everyone who needs health care.

The latest National Lockdown will hopefully mean that Sheffield hospitals never exceed capacity.
We know it’s difficult but remember your actions will save lives - thank you for continuing to show resilience, patience and kindness.
