Black women IRL have always had to be the best and try to deal with generational trauma, people calling Burnham a Mary Sue have missed the point and a learning experience.

Burnham emotionally repressed what happened to her parents, the moment she saw a Klingon again all of her unresolved trauma came flooding back. What we saw during the first two episodes of the series was a woman in pain trying to process her trauma now and as a child. (4/5)
