My mum is currently in the hospital with COVID and while we were trying to treat her at home I found twitter threads so helpful.
I wanted to make one because I know it’ll help at least someone fight this nasty thing.

First thing I would say to do is keep track of the days and the symptoms.
If things get serious this will allow medical professionals to make smart decisions about treatments.
Day 7-10 are the days where you need to pay most attention to the symptoms.

Dealing with the early symptoms:
Warm fluids and stay hydrated. Nothing cold.
Lemon, honey, ACV, ginger boiled down together to drink or in a bowl and used to steam the face really helped.
Hot rub on the chest and then pressed down with a hot towel also really helped my mum

They might not have energy to eat full meals or even be able to taste them so fruits and boiled veg were a great help.
Have a steady flow of air coming into the room, so leave the window open if you can.

This article really helped me to see what ‘type’ of COVID my mum had.
Honestly, preparation and tracking is the best tool to fight this thing in its most serious form.
If their/your symptoms are in 4-6. Purchase a pulse oximeter online.

Tracking oxygen levels with the pulse oximeter was what allowed us to know when to call the ambulance.
Use the pulse oximeter on your toes if you want to double check it’s accuracy.
Again, track everything. And call the ambulance if it gets too low (google what this is)

Don’t be afraid to call the ambulance.
If they need to be in hospital anyway, delaying will do more harm.
And also don’t be afraid to call more than once. The paramedics came to my house twice and took my mum in on the second time.

If short of breath, try not to panic as this makes it worse.
DO NOT lie on your back while sleeping as this allows fluids to settle in your lungs.
Sitting upright in a chair is best, if lying down, do so on your stomach or side if that isn’t possible.
Do breathing exercises

Like breathing in through the nose. Holding it for 4 and breathing out through the mouth.
Some people were suggesting walking around to keep energy and to fight it but honestly if you are physically unable to, what can you actually do.

Another article that really helped me to know what to look out for on whatever day of symptoms: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/30/well/live/coronavirus-days-5-through-10.html
A quick one on mental health:
Watching a parent battle with this is one of the most painful things you can witness.
Guilt, anxiety, stress. So only take in things that give you peace, if you don’t want to answer the phone, don’t.
Speak to people who know what they’re (cont)

Talking about, I lucked out having a pharmacist for a best friend and a Doctor friend who’s mum had also been in hospital so knows this thing in and out.
People that are honest and knowledgable are your best help here.
Being online helped at first but then it led to panic.

So after we called the ambulance, I stopped googling and stopped looking at twitter threads.
I barely slept for a whole week when this thing was at its peak but I went on CH and there was a gospel/worship room and I feel like it saved my life lol

Worship/Christian calm music really helped my headspace.
If you’re not religious, some calming music might help you too.
If you know someone who’s got this/ parents get this and it’s gets severe, reach out to them with a kind word, prayer or any support you have.

Even if they don’t respond. Be there.
I would not have made it through this without my extended family, boyfriend and best-friend.

This goes without saying but I’m not a medical professional, just someone who has looked after someone when COVID has taken a turn for the worst.
