I think one huge reason why danmei fans ignore/downplay the surrounding homophobia of the environment danmei authors contend with is because they don’t have to deal with or even see that homophobia; all they see is freely translated works being uploaded on free digital platform
THEY have no issue (besides the language barrier) accessing the content because it’s not behind any paywalls and most of these types of fans neither know nor care about paying authors on JJWXC or translators
So because THEY have no issue accessing these novels (no homophobic censorship, no websites blocked or monitored), they just assume this content is easily published & thus counts as the kind of LGBT rep they have the right to police or criticize or act entitled to
And that’s also why you get so many fans uncritically defending live action censorship or even praising it; the actual censorship to them is completely invisible and is thus a non-issue. It didn’t interfere with them getting their “LGBT rep” from danmei novels after all.
These fans treat danmei novels as the same kinds of western shows or novels with LGBT characters they think they “get” to claim as primarily theirs even tho they aren’t the primary demographic because they get to read it entirely for free and suddenly think it’s their playground
As long as they don’t have to go through the headache of paying for the content or wondering when a chapter will be locked or removed due to homophobic censorship, they won’t care. As long as they get to consume without any inconveniences.
