Frank Ocean: the quiet icon.
(a thread):
Christopher Edwin Breaux, mainly known as Frank Ocean, is one of the most quintessential artists of the last 10 years. yet he’s been under the radar his whole career and his fanbase is still huge, which is a testament to how iconic he is as an artist.
inspiration:
in 2009, Frank joined the hip hop collective Odd Future and met artists such as Tyler, the creator and Earl Sweatshirt. he made songs with the group and he claims that this inspired him to put out his first mixtape.
debut:
in 2011, he released his first mixtape, Nostalgia Ultra and this gained him a lot of recognition by artists everywhere. huge artists like Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Kanye West were interested in him. he released this under Def Jam but before this they weren’t as invested in him.
breakout:
in 2012, he released his first studio album, Channel Orange. it was immediately beloved as a masterpiece with critics and fans alike, and even allowed him to win 2 grammy’s. with many hits, CO is nothing short of great replay value, with many songs about love and drugs.
disappearance:
Frank later made and was featured on a few songs after the release of CO, and he said that he was working on his next album, dropping cryptic hints at what it may be for 4 years. but other than that he was really nowhere to be seen during that time.
stairs to success:
on 19th august 2016, he released Endless, a surprise release. it was a visual album exclusively on apple music, and it was a 140 hour livestream of him building a staircase. this was a setup for the most genius segment of his career.
$20 mil finesse:
the very next day, he independently released Blonde. he had completely tricked his label. Endless was his last album under Def Jam, so he gave an album that wasn’t the real deal, to his label; he didn’t need to give anything of what he made from Blonde, to them.
Blonde:
as opposed to the genius of the finesse, this was also one of the best albums of 2016 and is one of my favourites of all time. lush production and great stories. this album is nothing short of a masterpiece and has progressed the sound of music since it’s release.(1)
Frank shines as one of the best songwriters of this generation and as a great vocalist throughout this whole album. the instrumentals are sensational, making you feel as if you’re floating every time you immerse yourself in this 10/10 album. emotion-striking; this is amazing.(1)
