As an Asian in the diaspora new to the fic side of BTS, this deeply personal layer to reading about asian characters in fandom is new for me. I struggle with reconciling how I am reading stories about obstensibly Asian characters but they don't always feel like Asian stories.
Or like they aren't written by ppl who seem to have put in the due diligence. For example when they're set in the west sometimes I find myself asking: is this college AU written as if these characters are white?
Or conversely, is detail about their Asianness actually essentializing or fetishizing?
I've also been thinking about how there doesn't seem to be an equivalent convention to "britpicking" for the details about Korea. Authors seems to consult a someone for versimilatude anytime something is set in a different part of the English speaking world.
Like sure in this case there's a balancing act btwn asking for the labor of PoC and the audacity to assume you it don't need to consult someone when writing about a culture/people/place you aren't from
