Lots of discussion On Here about CT policies and their relevance/appropriateness to the attack on the Capitol. One thing that's going to start looming larger if things get worse before they get better is material support.
Material support in foreign CT policy is currently constructed very broadly, in ways that are not going to sit well when turned to domestic groups and persons.
If things get worse, you're going to see a lot of discussion of where to draw the line with collaborators and co-conspirators. Foreign CT material support is so broad it includes stuff like tweeting incitement, which is not likely to fly for DT.
There are going to be a lot of questions raised about fundraising, who paid for the buses and zipties, who paid for guns and ammo, who bought the wood to build the gallows. It's going to be a shitshow probably.
So there's that to look forward to.
Policy/law mess aside, we have two key flashpoints approaching. 1/17 and 1/20. In addition to looking at who shows up and who does violence, a key barometer of how bad things will get is going to be how much material support the people who show up receive from those who don't.
Just to be clear, I am not endorsing any policy approach to this, or a blanket expansion of CT policies to DR. I just expect to hear a lot of talk about this particular issue.
Jihadist groups, particularly in Afghanistan (1980s), Bosnia (1990s) and Syria (2010s) were able to raise massive amounts of funds because those crises opened the doors to wide support from non-combatants.
What's happening here is not directly comparable to those crises, but there *could* be a wide potential base for fundraising and other material support of insurrection that hasn't existed here for decades at least. We may have to reckon with that.
However, we'll have to see. It's not like there hasn't been money to be had in right-wing extremism up to now. It may not happen, and if it does happen, it may not be that impactful. Everything is up in the air right now.
Anyone who tells you they can predict exactly what the next six days, six weeks or six months are going to look like needs to check themselves.
This is a fair question. Also, it's much harder to move money discreetly these days. The days of the old IRA bar jar are probably in the past. https://twitter.com/Dsterms/status/1348420873670320135
