Every year at this time I share this article with my students. It tells the story of Justice Kagan’s grades in the first semester of law school.
For #1Ls: The curve is hard. And remember your 1st semester is just one tiny moment in a long career. /1 https://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/25/us/politics/25kagan.html

I share this today because a student wrote me over the weekend to share that this article changed his whole mindset.
He received his worst grades ever in his 1L fall but figured if J. Kagan could improve, so could he. And guess what? He did! /2

So whatever grades you get, whether you are excited or crushed, take a deep breath and remember the first semester is about learning the law but also learning about how to succeed at law school too. Take a deep breath.
New semester. Clean slate. /3

The one thing this *can* teach is what to focus on and what not to.
Focus more on cold calls than exam prep? Find a new way.
Succeed in one class more than others? Reverse-engineer what worked and double-down. Talk to the prof about what worked.
You can do it! /fin
