We are aware there is some concern with the emergency authorisation to use a targeted neonicotinoid, which we’d like to address. It has only been approved for emergency use as a seed dressing for sugar beet, not a spray.
It is also a non flowering plant, hence, bees are not interested in it. Also each seed is the size of a ball bearing and is precision planted, meaning there is next to no risk to bees.
Despite what large parts of the media are reporting, this is nothing to do with Brexit. 13 other EU countries have already granted a similar derogation. A blanket ban here would just move the issue to another country and we would have to import sugar
It is very naive to suggest farmers don’t understand the importance of bees across the world. This is why the sugar industry is progressing plans to tackle Virus Yellows without using neonicotinoids at all, including through research and development into natural crop resistance
