Why should we trust anything national conservatives say on economic policy when the movement started saying it wanted “dignity” for workers and not patronizing handouts, and is now reduced to Josh Hawley stumping for big fat checks for all?

Why should we think national conservatism offers any sort of return to politics based on good faith disputes when so many national conservatives misrepresent their intellectual opponents and dismiss large evidence bases out of hand?
Why should we take national conservatism seriously as a potential unifying political force when it has had nothing/zilch/zero interesting or novel to say about a genuine collective threat—COVID-19–except to push its mercantilist hobby horses?
