Over 85% of the Puget Sound owned housing stock is Single Family Detached.

We know that this is 1. An environmental disgrace, 2. Unsustainable, and 3. Entirely fixable.

Step 1 is to update the Washington State Growth Management Act.

🧵
The Puget Sound Region is on track for continued population growth long into the future. 1.8 Million more people will live in Pierce, King, Snohomish, and Kitsap counties by 2050.

89% of those new residents will live in dense communities and large urban centers.
Seattle has had a 53% increase in home price over just the last 5 years, is one of the hardest place in the country to buy a home, and it's the hardest it's been since 1980.

The lack of housing is pushing people further away from where they work. Commute times across the region have gotten significantly worse.

Passenger vehicles are still dominant despite great improvements in transit usage.
But Passenger Vehicles account for the vast majority of transportation related greenhouse gas emissions in our region and we are dramatically below our target.
We must allow for more people to live close to where they work. Encouraging dense urban growth instead of sprawl will make decrease our reliance on cars, protect our forests, and make housing more affordable.
But this has to happen in all urban centers: Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Everett, and Tacoma.

Exclusionary single family zoning has to be ELIMINATED, and not just along arterials, highways, and in historically poor neighborhoods. https://twitter.com/pushtheneedle/status/1332719528891928576
This is the CURRENT plan for Snohomish County and Kirkland.

This is 21st century redlining: giving renters the least desirable, most unhealthy areas while protecting the rich and white.
These zoning plans NEED to be better. They NEED to be coordinated at a state and county level. They NEED to protect minority communities.

The proposed update to the Washington State Growth Management Act will do just that.
Please contact your State Senator and Representatives. Get them on board with this essential legislation that must pass this year so that future city and county master plans utilize these rules.
