I’d go so far as to say that *every* story relies on tropes. They’re part of how stories make sense to us. It’s just, some folks call the ones they dislike or disdain “tired tropes” and the ones they respect or enjoy “a witty homage” or just “brilliant and original” or whatever. https://twitter.com/reebsthereader/status/1348722781735833610
To say a story relies on old or worn out tropes is to say almost nothing.
Tropes are there for all of us to use. It’s not a question of whether they’re ok to use or whether one or another is worn out or bad or whatever. (Though, some surely do bear close examination before you use them)
It’s a matter of how you use the material you’ve chosen for the story. So don’t worry about whether your story is full of tripes or whatever. Just use your materials as well and thoughtfully as you can in this moment.
