Just discovered the Spanish painter Vicente López Y Portaña (1772-1850) who seemed to specialise in portraits of jowelly, unattractive Spanish aristocrats dripping in lace and gold braid. I absolutely love them.
Good examples of what’s described in this very interesting thread on the decaying Spanish Empire and ‘the fossilising society of Spain’ in the 18th and 19th centuries - weighed down with all that bullion brought back in treasure ships from the New World. https://twitter.com/irkutyanin1/status/1349061135794888712
