If we really want to unlock the power of science, we need a better working relationship between academia and industry. In many fields, there’s a weird animosity between the two. In reality, they’re both critical pieces of the same puzzle

The mRNA vaccine is an excellent example of this working. Academic research paved the way, spun out companies like Moderna, and pharma/VC/govt funded.
But think of all the missed opportunities out there that we’ll never hear about it because they were never commercialized

For industry, we need to advocate for academic science. Provide mentoring to scientists on the many options out there. Give back to the system that helped form who we are. Seek ways to partner and fund basic research
For academia, we need MORE FUNDING. Fund basic science to find novel mechanisms. Fund engineering to make new tools. Fund translational to find useful applications. Fund ed to fill pipeline. Fund scicomm to engage public and spread sci thinking
Academics also need to better understand the power of industry. It’s not some evil force to run from. It’s a self-sustaining mechanism to solve problems. Businesses that don’t solve problems go out of business. The key question - which problems should they solve?
I believe science can help solve the worlds biggest problems. To me, these are societal inequity (racism and other isms), physical/mental health, climate change, healing of social/political chasms
Imagine if we unleashed the power of science, engineering, and other evidence-based thinking on the world. There’s nothing we can’t improve through better science.
