1/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Intro (1/2)
This is a 30-60 min data jam session where I make real-time observations.

If you want me to look at specific locations, reply and I’ll add it to the queue

2/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Intro (2/2)

I’ll kick things off w/ some hold-overs from yesterday:

Eastern Washington
Colorado
Dallas-Fort Worth / Collin County
3/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Eastern Washington (1/x)
🔸 Bad news: case rates are still very high
🔸 Good news: case rates are improved compared to 4 weeks ago
4/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Eastern Washington (2/2)
🔸 Ferry, Stevens, and Spokane counties are standouts in terms of % of tests returning (+)
🔸 Of the three, Spokane stands out because 1 in 10 tests are (+) and there are 400 cases/100K persons
5/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Colorado (1/x)

Pretty obvious that folks in Colorado gathered during Christmas —
🔸 there’s a full reversal in the case curve on Dec 30th.
🔸 those gatherings introduced a 3.5 week delay in recovery…maybe longer
6/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Colorado (2/x)

🔸 12 counties meet the White House COVID Task force definition for being in the “red zone”
🔸 Las Animas and Bent are standouts for having VERY high case rates *and* high test % positivity
7/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Colorado (3/3)

State-level mobility shows that folks went to malls and grocery stores leading up to Christmas, but (mostly) stayed home for NYE— that *may* translate into 1 post-holiday surge (instead of 2), but it’s too early to tell.
8/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Dallas-Fort Worth / Collin (1/x)

First: state-level mobility data shows that, for the most part, folks stayed at home for *most* of the holidays with one key exception: Christmas Eve

Note the spike:
9/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Dallas-Fort Worth / Collin (2/x)

Collin County:
🔸 At least 25 children have been hospitalized with COVID-19 each week for the last 5 weeks
🔸 At least 328 children have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since Sept 24, 2020
10/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Dallas-Fort Worth / Collin (3/x)

Dallas County:
🔸 233 children were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Dallas County during the week of Jan 1-7th.
🔸 Dallas Co. hospitals account for 50% of all pediatric COVID-19 admits since Jan 1st.
11/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Dallas-Fort Worth / Collin (4/x)

Dallas + Collin Co. are in Trauma Service Area “E”, as of yesterday:
🔸 59 ICU beds available
🔸 1 in 4 hospital beds is occupied by a COVID-19 patient
🔸 4158 COVID-19 patients is most for the state — by far
12/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Not too many folks interacting tonight, so I'll close things out by doing a deep dive into hospitalizations for Texas service area E (includes Dallas).

13/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Texas TSA E (1/x)

🔸 Note how the available beds (light green bars) shrink over time as more COVID-19 patients are admitted
14/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Texas TSA E (2/x)

Play this clip a few times and note how:
🔸 # of hospitalized patients w/ COVID keeps going up
🔸 % of beds w/ COVID-19 patients goes up then falls as beds are added, which drives the % down —> this happens multiple times
15/😷 Daily #COVID19 Data Discovery — Texas TSA E (3/x)

Sometime in mid-December, the rate of rise in COVID-19 patients outpaces the rate at which beds are added —> # of available beds starts falling and the % of beds with COVID-19 patients keeps going up, and up, and up.
