It's been a year since I visited my native Mexico 🇲🇽

The other day my wife scolded me: buddy asked what I missed most; I immediately answered "the food" (right answer: family?)

Life in Medellin is a dream, but its tacos suck

Mexico is on another level. Love Thread to Tacos 👇
2/ Many ask about my favorite tacos

Easy: Tacos El Frank in Tijuana

Their carne-asada tacos are heavenly, and every bite is nostalgia-infused bliss for me

Unfortunately, TJ trips are few and far between - so I usually settle for Mexico City, home of @LaHausCom Mexico...
3/ In Mex City, another memory colors my taco preferences:

January 1st 2009. I invited my (then-gf) wife to ring in New Year in 🇲🇽

After walking most of Condesa, we were famished. I wanted tacos, but outlets were closed

Only one was opened: @ElCalifaMx

Boy did they DELIVER
4/ When I talk to Mex City buddies @ChecoRojasCo, @federicoantoni or @MissCMcColgan, they point out the universe of taquerias beyond @ElCalifaMx

Names like Tacos La Onda, El Borrego Viudo, El Turix... but time and time again, three pop up: El Califa, Farolito and Tizoncito.
5/ A little over a year, @LaHausCom participated in the @Google Launchpad 🇲🇽 program put up by @solsona

On the 2nd-to-last day of the intense startup boot camp, many foreigners thought going to a wrestling show was the way to live an "authentic Mexican experience"...
6/ ...I knew better

I decided to exercise my critical thinking, embarking on a walking taste test of the best tacos in Mexico City:

- Tizoncito,
- Farolito, and
- El Califa
7/ In each spot I:

- Ordered two Al-Pastor tacos

- Asked taquero cutting the al-pastor to suggest beer pairing

- Added the spiciest salsa the taquero recommended

To neutralize the "appetite factor", I walked between each taco spot (at least 30 mins) to "build up hunger"
8/ Before revealing the ranking, I must say all three are SUPERB. You can't go wrong.

Also - I went at 9pm (peak taco time).

This ensures that the Al Pastor is flowing, so meat is fresh (same principle as Irish pubs applies - drink where the Guinness tab never stops flowing)
9/ Third place: @farolitooficial

Surprisingly weak for such a local fan favorite

Rubbery tortilla and al-pastor meat seasoning didn't pack as much of a punch

Most expensive of the three, which made the last-place decision even easier
10/ Second place: @ElTizoncito1966

The "creators" of Al-Pastor tacos put out solid offering

Very flavorful meat, and perfect tortilla texture. The Bohemia Oscura is also my go-to for any taco. Stands up to the salsas

Extra points: this was the least expensive of the 3
11/ First place: @ElCalifaMx

The one and only

The taqueria that won my heart that fateful New Years Day serves the MOST DELICIOUS tacos in Mex City

Perfect proportions and flavors = unique experience

A bit pricey, but less so than Farolito

Worth
every
peso
