TW/CW:
TRAUMA
TRAUMA
It PAINS me the MANY ways the capitol attack was traumatizing & the many we might never find out.
I commend @AOC for talking about her story in whatever detail she could & can't imagine how violating it must be to not feel safe even with your colleagues. https://twitter.com/emmaladyrose/status/1349202637493833732?s=20

As I have said before, this does not even take into account whatever trauma she, or anyone else comes into this with historically, & given even just her statement of safety, there is no way it is zero.
Emotionally safety needs to be prioritized, too. Not just physical safety.

We need to think about how trauma impacts this conversation now&in the future.
I hope they have accessible help (I saw @SpeakerPelosi asked for it)& that they feel able to ask for it& know it is a strength not a weakness to.
I hope it is long-term, as trauma has no timeline.

I also hope when people look at their colleagues and make decisions about how they vote or how they want to act towards each other (see:wearing masks, going through detectors), they think about what that person might be feeling.
It is called empathy. We could use a return to it.

Ok side bar, I am watching @AOC @instagram live and she mentions @RepRaskin had his DAUGHTERS with him at the capitol...
Like AS IF that family needed more...
And we have talked about how hard it has been for him...but...GOSH.
SIT. WITH. THAT. EVERYONE.

And then after saying they have had access to help, @AOC goes and gives a beautiful description of trauma as "too much, too soon, too fast" and tells people why they may be triggered and how there is no shame in getting or needing help.
OH AND SAYS MENTAL HEALTH IS HEALTH CARE
OH AND SAYS MENTAL HEALTH IS HEALTH CARE
& THEN in the the Q and A: @AOC Says: to be a good leader&set a good example, she needs to show people that she is willing to do the steps that she thinks everyone should be willing to do if they have gone through trauma (AKA COUNSELING)&says nobody should be ashamed to get help
Explains she is trying not to "bury myself in work." (a coping mechanism of choice for so many)
Says she did this at 18. When she SAW HER DAD DIE IN FRONT OF HER. Went to school. Did Well. Got good good grades.
But calls it: "Dealing by NOT dealing"
Says she did this at 18. When she SAW HER DAD DIE IN FRONT OF HER. Went to school. Did Well. Got good good grades.
But calls it: "Dealing by NOT dealing"
Says this pushed off dealing with processing it like 10 years: "Just because you are OK, or just because u can go to school or do well,or maintain a job, doesn't mean that thing hasn't hurt you,&you need to be able to process that hurt,&be your best self&integrate what happened"
She says trauma doesn't make anyone broken.
& no one makes it through life unscathed. "To live is to lose."
The best thing to do, she says, is to heal in healthy way and try to end the cycle of hurt. It is "how we can make the world better, & how we can heal the world"

She adds that trauma also sometimes makes you hurts yourself, and make you think you are "less than what you are" & "prevents the world from experiencing your brilliance & greatness."
She ends with---hoping everyone is OK(so do I) but "these things have a long tail."
