Starting on January 12, 1990 in the Central Lenin Square of Baku, you could heart chants:

- "Hail heroes of Sumgait"
- "Death to Armenians", and
- "Long live Baku without Armenians".

Then, the leaders of the protest split the large mob into smaller gangs. In their hands appeared previously prepared cold weapons and maps where the apartments of Armenians were marked.

People were being dragged out of their homes to be burnt or stoned to death or dropped from high balconies.

Women and elderly were being violated with inhuman barbarity and sadism.

Some Russians marked their homes as such to avoid being mistaken by the mob.

The massacres lasted for about a week. During the entire time the police, housing managers (zhek), and emergency services did not respond to calls.

The brutality stopped only with the entry of Soviet tanks into the city.

To this day the exact number of killed Armenians is unknown since no criminal case was opened for the mass killings. Nobody has been punished.

Based on rough calculations, the number of dead reached 300 with many dying afterwards in hospitals due to heavy trauma.

In 31 years, the attitude of Azerbaijani society towards Armenians hasn't changed. Even worse, if at that time a few courageous people stepped forward to hide and save their Armenian neighbors, today the generation that lived with Armenians is no longer there.

A new generation has appeared, brainwashed and poisoned with hate for anything Armenian.
