The financial order of operations:
-start to save an emergency fund. Prioritize this over fast debt payoff or huge investments.
-as you save, remember EVERYTHING counts. That $10? COUNTS! Please don't feel that small amounts of money aren't good enough: THEY ARE
-Get to 1 month living expenses. Some people say $1000, but in most of the US, $1000 doesn't even cover a months rent, let alone groceries, healthcare, or transportation. Aim for one month to have a solid base.
-From here you've got a choice: keep saving or pivot to debt payoff
-I like 4 months living expenses in an e fund but YMMV.
-Wheb it comes to debt, you can focus on paying it off LOWEST BALANCE first or HIGHEST INTEREST first. Money nerds like to debate this but tbh whatever works for you is good.
-Here's another space for nuance in your money journey: do you invest while paying off debt??? Many big names will tell you NO. I think for women and people of color, disable folks and queer folks, the answer is largely YES.
That wage gap and workplace discrimination is a BEAST
-But how much and how to know where to start? Easy place: workplace retirement plan, ESPECIALLY if you are lucky enough to have a employer match. Put in what you need to get the match and then return focus on debt.
-Dobt have a workplace retirement plan? Welcome to my club! (And about 40% of other Americans 😐)
Pick an IRA and open one. Put in $100/month if you can. REMEMBER ANY AMOUNT IS A GOOD AMOUNT, no contribution shaming here
-Continue to make payments till that debt is gone and then shift to cash savings for other goals AND ramp up those investments.
-LIKE REALLY, RAMP UP THOSE INVESTMENTS. That's money future you is going to live on!!
And that's it. That's literally what all of us money nerds are screaming about when it comes to first money steps.
