Ok, so people wanna keep being gross and calling a canon lesbian ship sisterly. Fuck no.
“They were raised under the same roof!”

They were raised in a barracks. In a military type cult. As child soldiers.
Adora sees Shadow Weaver as a commanding officer first and mother figure second, as she states in Mystacor. Shadow Weaver no doubt trained Adora and watched her progress, mentored her like Micah, but as Adora herself states, SW was never kind to her. Never loved her.
Catra states SW “took her in” as a child, not as a baby, meaning SW likely didn’t raise her at all, not like Adora (who was an actual baby). Hordak calls Catra SW’s ward, meaning she is technically under SW’s “protection,” though we know SW only kept her around for Adora.
To me, this implies that not only was Catra old enough to properly befriend Adora, meaning she would’ve slept in the bunks with the other children and wouldn’t have been nurtured by SW at all, but that SW saw her more as a playmate or even a pet for which Adora was responsible.
Additionally it is unclear how many wards SW possesses. There’s a host of orphans living in the Horde, and she’s Hordak’s second in command. It’s dumb to assume she only keeps track of Catra and Adora. Catra likely only gets so much heat from her because she’s best friends +
with Adora, meaning SW targets her because of her proximity whenever SW is watching Adora, who we know is her favorite of the cadets. Speaking of which...
“You love being her favorite!” is another argument people use to imply Catra and Adora are sisters. Except the context of that phrase is not limited to parent/child relationships. You have teacher’s favorites, too. Commander’s favorites. +
And let’s not forget that Glimmer uses the exact same phrase on Adora, accusing her (while partially acting) of being jealous that Glimmer is SW’s new favorite. So are you saying they’re sisters now too because Glimmer started relying on SW? 🙄
And SW does this to several kids. Corners them when they’re helpless and tries to “guide” them with fake affection. Micah, Glimmer, Adora, Catra. They’re all victims of it.

And yes, Catra has some affection for SW. Catra wants to impress her. Know why?
Because Catra is a fucking orphaned child who was brought into a strange place where she was routinely abused and could only form a truly positive bond with one other orphan/cadet. She’s starved for affection, having no real parental figures and very little guidance.
And when SW is out of the picture, guess what Catra does next? She jumps to the next authority figure in her life - Hordak - and yearns for approval. SW was not Catra’s mother, but she was the only authority figure this lonely kid could find at the time.
And because Catra was Adora’s best friend, even though Adora was abused too, seeing all the attention she received from the only authority figure in Catra’s life was a huge blow for Catra, especially since we know she and Adora are evenly matched in skill.
And because I know someone’s gonna bring it up: the books aren’t canon and were written years ago from the perspective of someone who didn’t know where Noelle was taking the ship and just assumed the relationship was supposed to be sisterly.
Because two women can’t be close without it being sisterly. Because that is the norm people were raised with, and it’s homophobic and completely illogical. Anyways, I’m done. Catradora is my feel good ship and I’m tired of seeing assholes try to tear it down. Peace. ✌🏻
