Here are 10 quick tips to tighten up your copywriting for any business communication, whether you’re writing a cold pitch or copy for a marketing landing page.

👇
/ Use simple words. As in sight words on your grade school flashcards kinda vocabulary. Leave the thesaurus and technical jargon for research papers you submit to academic journals.
/ Basic sentence structure works best. Don’t expect your audience to spend too much of their time figuring out what they’re reading.
/ Only introduce one idea per sentence.

/ Active voice > passive voice.
/ Make formatting your friend. Be strategic with your use of white space, bold important words for emphasis, use bullets or numbered lists, etc.

/ If you use an acronym, provide a definition. Don’t assume everyone automatically knows what you mean.
/ Provide a visual if it makes things easier to understand.

/ Test out a variety of presentation formats. Lists vs. Q&A vs. long-form paragraphs, etc.
/ Use a readability checker as a general guide to help point out opportunities for improvement. I recommend Yoast, Hemingway App, Grammarly or Readable.
/ End with a strong call-to-action or question to encourage engagement.
