Thread:
With Boateng and Alaba leaving next season, and the rest of Bayern's defenders needing proper competition Bayern have been targeting a centerback in the market, namely Dayot Upamencano from Rb Leipizig. But, what does Upamecano offer that is different from the rest?
In this thread we will discover this. To start we will be making a comparsion between each of their main attrubites, defensive activity, ball progression, and defensive persistance. I will also touch base on other small attrubites that make Upamecano special.
To start, here is a comparsion of their defenisve activity.
I thought it is fair to calculate defensive volume by how their defensive actions p90/number of successful pressures p90 in 20/21. Here is how Upamecano faired.
As seen in the graph, Alaba is great at pressing, with more successful pressuers than any centerback at Bayern. And Upamecano does not fill that hole, however, Upamecano is a much more active defender than Alaba and Boateng, and he presses more effectively
than Boateng.
Not to mention that Lucas Hernandez is very good at pressing, also young Nizanzo seems very promising in this regard as well( his stats came from his time at PSG).
Another important requirement for a centerback at Bayern(arguably the most important in Flick's system), is their ball progression ability. Whether by carries or passes. Here is how our defenders fair.
Upamecano would be one of the best ball progressers at Bayern Munich, and that is not an easy thing to claim at all, Flick would absolutely love his ball progessing abilites. He covers up for Alaba and more in that regard.
Another aspect of ball progression, the number of progressive carries per90/number of progressive passes p90. Why use this as well? Well, sometimes balls don't need to cover the entire field for them to be effective, the tendacny to progress the ball is a very important aspect.
You may ask, why is it different in both graphs? Upamecano is a different type of ball progresser than the ones we have at Bayern. When he carries the ball, he drives deeper, when he passes the ball he passes it longer, while Alaba attempts more of these in shorter distances.
Side things to note, Upamecano is more brave on the ball than any of our defenders(bar Lucas, but his stats are effected by his time at lb), he attempts more dribbles than anyone bar Lucas.
It is also worth mentioning that Upamecano attempts more long passes per game (22.2!!!!) than anyone at Bayern bar Boateng. And he comples 84% of these somehow!! (Boateng only completes around 74% of these)
He is a Flick type of centerback. That is all there for me to say.
I will not say my opinion on these as to not affect your judgment, I am waiting to hear your opinions on him first.
End of thread. Hope that helped.
Replace Boateng with Matip and Gomez and you get the Liverpool version, he is somewhat similar to them.
