I sent an annual update to Tock employees last week and want to share a small part of the email in light of $15 min wage / no tipping debate.

I started Tock to help the hospitality industry with core beliefs that have not changed at all since 2010:

/1
Variable pricing in two directions makes sense to optimize sales and is good for both restaurants and diners. New economic levers need to be created. /2
Tipping is an antiquated and damaging policy that should be eliminated. /3
When demand is high it is equitable to ask consumers for a deposit or prepayment -- once they have skin in the game hospitality improves. /4
Art and commerce are necessary for one another and improve each other. /5
Digital payments upon egress instead of checks will inevitably happen and save time, money, prevent theft, and reduce human error. /6
Businesses should ‘own’ their customers, not rent them from third party middlepersons. /7
Everything we build @Tock whether bookings, events, merch sales, Tock to Go, CRM to know the customer, etc. moves those ideas forward.

If operators want to be reactionary instead of forward thinking they will be running against the wind.

We build sails to ride the larger trend
not only because that makes a better business which in turn creates better experiences and hospitality, but because the equitable practices for labor and customers are also good business and make the work not just interesting but important.

I am pro $15/ min wage + no tipping.
