Luke Shaw has created many Debates in the United Fanbase. Some love the player while there are many others who believe he isn’t good enough for United. In this thread I will be comparing some of his on the ball and Defensive metrics with the best LB in the league and arguably(1)
the world Andy Robertson. A small thread. (2)
Firstly, lets address the myth that Shaw can’t create or isn’t competent in attacking. Robertson one of the most offensive Fullback in the league averages 0.19 xA per 90. To put that into comparison Luke Shaw averages 0.14 xA per 90 in the league.
Even though Robertson has a higher xA per 90 Shaw isn’t much behind with 0.14 xA per 90.

Andy Robertson averages 1.88 Key Passes per 90 in the league this season. Luke Shaw averages 1.77 Key Passes per 90. Not bad for a Full Back who can’t attack apparently.
Let’s look at their Shot Creating Actions and Goal Creating actions per 90 this season.
A SCA is described as an offensive action directly leading to a shot. It includes dribbles, Passes, drawing fouled etc. Andy Robertson has 2.76 SCA per 90 in the prem.
Luke Shaw averages 2.94 SCA per 90 in the league. He is the highest in this metric for Fullbacks in the league. Immense.
Looking at GCA in the league Andy Robertson averages 0.59 GCA per 90 in the league. Shaw averages 0.34 GCA per 90 in the league. Not bad at all.
I have always rated Shaw as a great Ball carrier and this stat proves that. Luke Shaw is also the highest for Left Backs in the league for Carries into the final third with 43 carries just edging Robertson who has 42 carries even though Luke Shaw has less minutes than Robertson.
Shaw’s dribbling is his most underrated part of his game for me. People assume he is slow and can’t dribble but that is not the case. He is a very good dribbler with 15 successful dribbles completed with 1.27 dribbles per 90 and a Success rate 68.2%,
making him one of the most efficient dribblers in the league.

Robertson on the other side has completed 16 successful dribbles with 0.94 dribbles per 90 with a success rate of 57.1%.

Shaw being the superior dribbler.
Defensively Shaw is solid as a rock in the back and comparing him to Robertson who himself is a great defender shows Shaw’s defensive prowess.
Shaw tackles 62.65 percent of dribblers who attempt to dribble past him and has been only dribbled past 9 times in the Prem with being dribbled past 0.76 times per 90.
Robertson has tackled 40% of dribblers and has been dribbled past 13 times in the Prem being dribbled past 0.76 times per 90. Both immense in one on one situations.
Shaw has 62 successful pressures in the league. Robertson on the other hand has 52 successful pressures in the Prem after playing playing in Klopp’s Intense Gegenpressing system. Full Marks for Shaw here.
Shaw has a 53.3% success rate in aerial duels with 13 aerial duels won. Robertson on the other hand is equally impressive with winning 53.1 % of his duels in the air both showcasing their aerial prowess. And both have 1 error each leading to an opponent’s shot.
I am not comparing other defensive stats such as tackles and interceptions cause Robertson’s Liverpool have the ball more than the other teams hence he doesn’t need to deal with opponent Attackers as much as Shaw, giving Shaw an advantage in these stats.
The above metrics Showcase how Luke Shaw is actually one of the most underrated players in the league with him being very good in possession producing similar numbers to Andy Robertson one of the best Offensive fullbacks in the world in many of the above metrics.
Defensively Luke is solid as ever and also pressing very good out of possession.
Hopefully this thread does open many peoples’ eyes and they start acknowledging Luke Shaw more.
