. @FlCourtHistory is honored to announce that its Board of Trustees unanimously has selected Joseph W. Hatchett as the recipient of the Society’s 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award recognizes an individual who has devoted a lifetime to improving the lives of others. The award will be presented on Jan. 28 during the Society’s “A Supreme Evening” virtual event.

Only 10 individuals have received this recognition in the Society’s history. Judge Hatchett will be joining ranks with other distinguished recipients such as Gov. Reubin Askew, Sandy D’Alemberte and Judge Rosemary Barkett.

Judge Hatchett is a pioneer in Florida law as the first Black person appointed to the Florida Supreme Court since Reconstruction, and the first Black person ever elected to public office in a statewide election in the South.

Judge Hatchett was appointed in 1975 by Gov. Askew to serve on the Florida Supreme Court and retained his seat through a statewide election in 1976.
