This is, more than anything, an equity issue. We should want to recruit the best and brightest students to work with us, not the students who can afford to work for less. Come on now.

If you’re in a fortunate position to get hired at an institution and you care about diversity, equity, and inclusion, negotiate this as part of your package. Stress to your chair the importance of having resources to help build the pipeline. This matters. A lot!
