I’ve seen the ‘fanfiction is bad’ take rolling around again so here are my (angry) two cents:

1) Fic writers work For. Free. And they work hard. I can tell you that every single writer I have met cares about being the best they can be. Fic is not ‘lazy’, it is a way of-
-learning and improving with a captive audience who care.
2) It’s collaborative. There are hidden communities of writers working right now who talk to each other about ideas 24/7. They make connections, find work together, help each other, share opportunities with each other.

3) Some fic is better written than any novel you will ever read. This is not in spite of it being a fan project, it is because of it. A reader will spend hours or days on a fic because it grips them and makes them feel something. They may pay for a published book and find-
-no pleasure at all in it because the author has not tried to engage them. Fic can be formulaic but you know what? So are most books. And sometimes formulas don’t work. When it comes down to it, you’ve just paid a fiver you’ll never get back for a book you didn’t enjoy.
4) Who are you to judge? People want their work to be out there. The sites they do it on are owned by a group or a company. It is the biggest platform they can get since they can’t walk up to a publisher and ask nicely. If you work, you do not have time to self publish.
Fanfic writers don’t need your shit thrown at them. These are people who work tirelessly and may work better and longer than you do for very little reward. Shoo.
