Okay, I've been thinking about this post. It really bothered me and I couldn't figure out why I was so affected by it.
It reminds me of this Brazilian painting called "Blanqueamiento"
Which literally means "whitening"
And I'll make a thread about it below: https://twitter.com/dusktodawnAM/status/1350622664189218818

In this painting "Blanqueamiento," it depicts a black grandmother, her biracial child and her white grandchild. The grandmother is praising God that she is able to wash the curse of blackness off of her.

Latin American countries. Countries like Brazil would import European immigrants in hopes that they would "whiten" the population of black people in Brazil.
There is even a phrase is Spanish "Mejorar La Raza" which means to "improve the race" through generational whitening

Other countries did this as well. But the root of this is a belief that blackness is a curse or a handicap in some way.
The most hurtful and dissapointing part of this conversation is that I'm hearing this retoric from a black girl.

This more than likely is how you feel about yourself
This thread isn't meant to attack anyone, but I hope we all take a step back and do some self reflection.
These circles are meant for us to learn to love ourselves and our blackness
From our dark skin to our kinky hair

To do the internal work to build ourself esteem, our careers, and be the bring forth the best versions of ourselves

Anti blackness doesn't happen in a vacuum, and there is nothing inherently inferioir about your blackness.
But it breaks my heart when I see black people, especially black GIRLS repeating this or something similiar

But if one person feels this way, I'm sure some of may hold similar beliefs that we may not know is rooted in anti blackness
So I would like to take this moment and ask us to do some self reflection. What are ways that you buy into anti blackness

As divested as we may feel that we are, we may be unknowingly lugging around old beliefs systems from our past that we need to explore
I encourage everyone that can, to get therapy. To get a journal. To roll up your sleeves and face some of the scary shadow parts of ourselves
