"McVay needs a mobile QB" to really excel. Why? Is he that limited as a coach & play caller? Shanahan got 2 immobile QBs to a Superbowl (Jimmy G & Matt Ryan) & should've won both. They didn't lose because their QB wasn't mobile. Belichick won 6 w/ Brady. Coughlin got 2 w/ Eli.
If you look at the past 25 Superbowls (since 1995), 8 have been won by mobile QBs - Favre, Elway × 2, Big Ben × 2, Rodgers, Wilson, & Mahomes. Big Ben did nothing in his 1st Superbowl win but his team did win so...
17 of the past 25 Superbowls have been "won" by pure pocket passers at QB - Aikman, Warner, Dilfer, Brady × 6, Brad Johnson, P. Manning × 2, E. Manning × 2, Brees, Flacco, & Foles. You can win with immobile QBs.
12 of the past 25 Superbowls featured mobile QBs vs pure pocket passers. The pure pocket passers are 7-5. Warner > McNair, Johnson > Gannon, Brady > McNabb, Manning > Grossman, Flacco > Kaepernick, Brady > Wilson, & Manning > Newton.
The 5 mobile QBs to win over the pure pocket passers - Favre > Bledsoe, Elway > Chandler, Big Ben > Warner, Wilson > Manning, Mahomes > Jimmy G.
Only 3 of the past 25 Superbowls have been between mobile QBs. Elway > Favre, Big Ben > Hasselbeck, & Rodgers > Big Ben.
10 of the past 25 Superbowls have been between pure pocket passers - Aikman > O'Donnell, Dilfer > Collins, Brady > Warner, Brady > Delomme, Manning > Brady, Brees > Manning, Manning > Brady, Brady > Ryan, Foles > Brady, Brady > Goff.
Mobile QBs that can throw are nothing new. Fran Tarkenton, Roger Staubach, Greg Landry, Bobby Douglass, Archie Manning, Steve Grogan, & Jim Zorn were scrambling & running through defenses in the 60's & 70's. Randall Cunningham, Joe Theismann, John Elway, & Steve Young were next.
The point is mobile QBs are nothing new. They also aren't some "cure-all" that will guarantee the Rams contend every year. Is mobility an advantage? Yes. But it doesn't do much good if said QB can't use that mobility to enhance the team's offense & in particular the passing game.
Take Lamar Jackson as an example. The Ravens are 31-7 in the regular season with him as QB. They get by w/ a good, aggressive defense & a punishing running game enhanced by the threat of Jackson's running prowess. Their passing game is not very good. It has not progressed.
The Ravens offense is averaging a mere 13 ppg in 4 playoff games under Jackson, while trailing 23-3, 28-6, & 17-3 in their 3 losses. Their only playoff win came against a bad Titans defense last week. Jackson is as athletic & mobile as a QB gets, but that only gets you so far.
So the love affair w/ the Rams "needing" a mobile QB to be successful is just typical fans thinking the grass is always greener elsewhere. I believe they can be plenty successful if they improve their pass pro & get more speed at WR on offense. Success will follow, like 17' & 18'
