“Why didn’t Navalny stay in Germany? Why has he gone back to the dragon’s den?” A selfish part of me asked similar questions about my mother’s work that cost her her life. Sometimes Alexei’s family must wonder the same.
But now I know the answer. If we always put self-preservation above everything else, there would be no social change. Unfortunately, the quest for truth and freedom often involves a sacrifice. But such sacrifices mustn’t be ignored or ridiculed.
Instead, it should serve as inspiration and a call to action to those who can enjoy their freedom. They can’t kill and imprison us all. The worst thing one can do is retreat to cynicism and give up altogether.
