I think there are fans who are frustrated with Shoji Kawamori because he's nerdy enough to include a bunch of very specific aviation details in his designs, but practical enough to say "they have to look different because the audience needs to be able to keep track."
like there's lore for why the main fighter in Macross Frontier and Delta based on the VF-17 and not the VF-19, but the real reason is "the cannon fodder needs to look different than the hero mecha." And the VF-19 was literally designed to be a hero mecha.
i'm so detached from big macross circles so i dunno if people still say the next series needs to "get back to Plus" but all that really meant is the colors are muted and it gives you a violence boner so you can ignore the female stuff
now this probably wasn't the intent on the production side, but western fan response for Frontier was positive because the whiners got their violence boner and it distracted them from the main boy Alto being a literal Kabuki Onnagata
