A must read on so many levels.

I would add that the ‘naive’ referenced here are not so because of politics or ideology but because they never made the effort to educate themselves.

Those experienced in China are unlikely to disagree with the essay https://twitter.com/mattschrader_dc/status/1350868595086127105
Here’s a recent example to support one of the points made by Perry Link:

Western liberals who (rightly) point out Trump’s lies only to ignore (or worse propagate) disinformation spread by the CPC’s long established propaganda department. (1/9)
This example looks at how Chinese propaganda plays mainstream Western media.

10 days ago a Global Times piece was promoted through Chinese news aggregators quoting CNN as saying China is the “winner” from US chaos (2/9)

https://xw.qq.com/cmsid/20210107A0E9Y300?f=newdc
The GT article says CNN are quoting a joke from the Chinese internet and that “Chinese netizens are telling the truth”

Now where did CNN find these quotes from Chinese netizens? (3/9)
The CNN article that GT is referring to says “China is thriving in the chaos of the US presidential transition”.

The netizen quote is:

"This is the first political coup to happen in the American continent without the involvement of US embassies,"
(4/9) https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/07/china/china-us-hong-kong-transition-biden-trump-intl-hnk/index.html
Did they scour Chinese social media posts for these gems?

(Did they interview Chinese citizens themselves?)

No...

The source was...

...

The Global Times!
(5/9) https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202101/1212074.shtml
In a masterclass of media manipulation, GT were able to take US Capitol images & ‘netizen comments’ and use an English article to spin it to a major US news outlet, and then spin it once again for a second domestic article to imply CNN affirms the China is winning narrative (6/9)
The GT staff can be pleased with their work, the CNN staff published some copy, CNN got some clicks and advertising revenue while CNN readers’ perceptions of China have been shaped by the Global Times, which is published by the CPC (7/9)
P.s. yes CNN described GT as an ultra-nationalist state-run tabloid and said netizen comments were selective, but

1.) if so why include?
2.) are these comments real?

CNN has no idea if the comments published by state media in government controlled internet are true (8/9)
Sure some Chinese would look at the chaos and see downsides in the US political system but you won’t be able to see comments from those netizens wishing they could do the same in China (ends)
