Since you’re likely to be inundated w/taken out of context, disneyfied interpretations of MLK’s positions, here is a thread of what I think are some of his best insights—taken from “Where Do We Go From Here?” (his last published text and, for me, a great source of inspiration.)
on the notion of “social progress”:
on the supposedly immutable, primordial nature of white racism/supremacy:
on power, and why any movement must build political power if it is to ever be successful:
on the inevitability of defeat, and why we should not allow setbacks to lead us to despair:
on white people’s responsibility for justice, and how they must recognize that their fate is tied up w/black people’s fate:
on the media, and why their need for sensationalism is anathema to any movement for social justice (particularly relevant given the rise of trash ass cable news and their need to “both sides” every. single. thing.):
on the limitations of “buying black” as a form of racial justice (👀 at you, LLC twitter lol)
finally, on education for education’s sake, and why education that isn’t being used for social action is pointless. also, why any successful social actions must be rooted in an understanding of our enemy and the battles we face (this means understanding political HISTORY):
i could go on, but I would implore everyone to really dig into MLK’s works (if you can). He isn’t a deity and shouldn’t be interpreted as such, but I find his insights to be EXTREMELY relevant for anybody committed to building a better word for EVERYONE. ❤️
*world, but i guess word works, too lol.
