Today was a warm, sunny day. I spent time wandering in Lahore's Miani Sahib graveyard. It felt good. I always learn something by just looking at tombstones - familiar names, names that are no longer popular, calligraphic styles, poetry, different forms of memorialization
Here's an interesting tombstone of a guy whose father was Malik Lal Din 'Hitler'!
'Chandu', I believe, is not the most common female name that you will come across these days
a lot of Ahrari Amritsaris related to Maulana Ahmed Ali Lahori are buried here
All I know about Major General Moin-ud-Din is that he died in the plane crash with General Zia-ul-Haq in August 1988
Unusual tombstones, beautiful calligraphy
Maulana Noor Muhammad Batalwi was such a patriot that he died of a heart attack when he came to know about the East Pakistan debacle in 1971
The most unusual was the quarter for female artists whose tombstones carried their mother's name. I was told about this tradition by M.R. Shahid, man with encyclopedic knowledge of Lahore's graveyards. He is obsessed with the dead, has published several books on graveyards!
