I'd like to start a thread of tweet called 'Instead of..' where I suggest a woman artist you should look into instead of a male one. Specifically into women artists whose work has been appropriated by male artists, or generally a similar artist who is less of a dick.
Up first is Janet Sobel instead of Jackson Pollock. Sobel's drip paintings are on record as being a great influence on Pollock (he stole her style and technique).
"Clement Greenberg, an art authority in Sobel's time, wrote on avant-garde painting and positioned "Sobel as a forerunner of Abstract Impressionism", but he made sure to emphasize Sobel's work as inferior to Pollocks by reducing it as "'primitive'" and that of a "'housewife'"."
A little nugget I found on wiki
