The Nike swoosh was created by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson in 1971.

The startup Nike paid her $2/hour for her work, and she was paid $35, after creating the design in about 17 hours. (1/3)
She later received 500 shares as a thank you present following Nike’s IPO, stock which she never sold.
Following Nike’s 6 stock splits since 1990, Caroline’s gift has now accumulated to 32,000 Nike shares. At $146/share, this stock is now worth $4.7 million (R72 million). (2/3)
Quite possibly more valuable than this however, is what she has since charged for her work, after adding “Creator of the Nike swoosh” to her resume. (3/3)
