As the election season effectively ends today, with the inauguration and the swearing-in of 3 senators, I find myself overwhelmed with awe and gratitude for so many who worked so hard to ensure the most secure election in US history, and that the will of the people was heard. /1
These heroes of democracy include many in the media (incl my amazing colleagues @CBSNews), those who work in non-profits (incl my team @ElectionInnov), and most importantly, the many election off'ls of both parties who gave voice to the American people during a pandemic. /2
I cannot name all of them -- some of them you know, and so many others you don't. They are Democrats, they are Republicans, they are non-partisans. Some were required to find the will for many public acts of bravery. Others acted with quiet and sustained courage throughout. /3
Some still won't admit it because their fragile egos won't allow them, or because they see an opportunity for grift, but this was the most successful, most secure election in American history. The facts, as shown by the heroes who saved our democracy, are clear. /4
The largest number and highest percentage of Americans voted than ever this year, in the midst and in spite of a global pandemic and a massive disinformation campaign, led by our foreign adversaries and the White House itself. /5
For the first time ever, every battleground state used auditable paper ballots, and more audits were conducted than ever before. Ballots were counted, recounted, and audited in the states, and in GA, for instance, the presidential race was counted THREE TIMES. /6
Every court agreed that this election was secure, and found no evidence of fraud. Over 60 courts agreed, and when pressed by courts, the loser and his allies dismissed their own cases and admitted they had no evidence of fraud. /7 https://twitter.com/beckerdavidj/status/1342173761076932608?s=20
81 million people voted for Biden, a margin of more than 7 million more than his opponent, a sitting president. In a very divided country, Biden received over 300 electoral votes, by at least 5-digit margins in every state he won. /8
Nevertheless, the loser of the election repeated the big lie, and only two weeks ago, we suffered an attack of domestic terrorism and insurrection, led by the White House, because the loser's supporters were led to believe that the will of the people could be undone. /9
We have much work to do, but democracy has withstood this attack, thanks again to the work of so many, particularly those who work in elections in the states. They have suffered sleepless nights and threats, and I pray they will find the strength to continue their work. /10
So as we celebrate this renewal of America, let's also raise a glass to those who worked so hard to make our voice heard, and who spoke truth despite the costs. Our democracy stands because of laws and the people who stood steadfast in their service. /END
