Today I turn 40. I've seen people write lessons about what they'd tell their 18 y/o self, but I'm taking this in a different direction. What would I tell my future self? Here are some ramblings of an old man... / 1
It's never too late to improve oneself physically, emotionally and intellectually. It scares me how complacent people become with their life as they age. I don't ever want to be that, or why is life worth living? / 2
Humanity has an excuse problem. This "woe is me" culture that has permeated over the last few years is just pathetic. Everyone has a sob story. Get over it. Stop making excuses and go out and do something about it. / 3
I know many people that were in great shape in high school or college. Now, in their late-30's or early 40's, they are in terrible shape. Some even need medication to help their various ailments. Almost none care to change the behaviors that got them to this point. / 4
We all get more wise as we age. This is natural as it comes with life experience. But wisdom is not the same thing as using intellectual thought. As we age, it becomes more and more difficult to think and be challenged while having an open mind. / 5
This is why older people struggle with new technology. They are "stuck in their ways." Even some very smart people can end up drawing very faulty conclusions about the world if they aren't constantly reevaluating their own views and witnessing the changes around them. / 6
Everyone is different and will have their own ways to challenge themselves. However, the goal for everyone should be to keep finding ways to improve in those three categories - physical, emotional, and intellectual. Harmony in these will keep one happy.

What will I do... / 7
Physical: I'm spending the year focusing on cycling. I constantly finish in the top 25% or higher in the bike portion of triathlons, yet I've been dropped from all four road races I've done. I'm looking forward to improving my shit race tactics. / 8
Intellectual: My businesses constantly challenge me and being an entrepreneur will always keep my mind stimulated. Don't remember where this quote is from that if you want to learn about something to "not read about it, write about it." / 9
That subscription to the Atlantic or Time magazine isn't going to make you smarter. In fact, it will make you a lot dumber. I've learned that writing about issues really helps open up the mind. Sometimes, it gets me to completely change my stance on a issue. More writing! / 10
Emotionally: I'm not big on religion so the focus here just needs to be on my family and friends. The terror of Covid has pushed people further apart than ever. My goal is to alleviate those fears and bring people back together. / 11
I've never done drugs or even smoked a cigarette. I think it's funny when I get asked in a condescending tone why I won't touch drugs. Why would anyone ever encourage a vice? I don't encourage drinking and gambling (which I love).

Whatever they are, limit your vices. / bonus
