I just love how Index is so different from your standard tropey chuuni fantasy fiction. Its magic is true to the real world, it understands the intimate relationship between magic and art, emotional and cultural expression.
Magic is like language, every corner of history has its own brand of language, and to master it or counter it, you need to learn that cultural language.

Every magician is unique too, their magic is their world. To defeat a magician requires understanding how they see the world.
Without bothering to understand others, Accelerator is at first unable to counter magic. Its only when he begins to expand and open his personal reality that he can counter and master magic.
Touma is the perfect protagonist for the magic side though. There's a reason most of his fights come down to dramatic dialogues; his method of fighting requires understanding his opponent's hearts, to then dismantling their illusions so they can hopefully reach an understanding.
There are some people his words can't reach, but those he can usually end up as allies thereafter.

For everyone else, at least by understanding them he can understand the weaknesses of their magic and, if necessary, stop them by force.
What can I say? I just find this a lot more interesting and engaging than most stereotypical magic in anime.
