Thread: The struggles that the UK Basketball team is going through is kind of baffling. On paper, they look like a team of elite athletes who will join all the other Cats in the NBA and chasing max contracts. On the court, they look like a hot mess with no direction.
As a team, they are extreme underachievers. As individual players, they are extreme underachievers. They seem to be content with lazy passes, low effort on defense, and taking losses. I'd be willing to bet though, they aren't content with any of these things.
They just don't know how to break out of the slump. As UK players, they're expected to figure out how to play top level NCAA ball and our fan base struggles to allow some grace while that happens.
When Kentucky is winning, there's not a better fan base for players to celebrate success with than #BBN. But when they're losing, there's not a worse fan base than us. My mind has abandoned thoughts of the NCAA Tournament and directed towards these young athletes.
They have been unable to enjoy any of the positives they were expecting when they chose UK. When they knelt, they were flooded with hate and anger by the fans they dreamed to entertain. When they open apps on their phone, they see nothing but old men telling them
how much they suck. Hard times over the past several months have given me different perspective. I was extremely frustrated watching them lose to a weak Georgia team, but I didn't see players who didn't want to win. I saw very young men who are lost on the court.
Constantly surrounding them with negativity and discussing on radio and social media which specific players are the worst ones isn't going to help. I like to think that a large part of #BBN is here for the team win or lose. I choose to be one of those fans.
I support these young men regardless of their record and will watch every game the rest of the season. (unless Teddy Valentine is officiating) Even if they can't muster another win all season, I'll follow them in their dream of playing in the NBA
and root for them wherever their careers take them. From the first time that blue and white jersey drops over their shoulders, they're one of ours.

Go Cats!
