PSA for the 'screening saves lives' brigade:
Screening tests are designed to find conditions or risk factors for disease in people who do not have symptoms.
They can be very inaccurate and should not be used as a diagnostic tool. 1/2
Patients who report with symptoms require investigations, not a screening test. Patients with worrisome symptoms should not have to wait until they are 'eligible' for screening or 'due' for their next routine test.
This young lady's story is a prime example of HCP's failure to act appropriately. She did not need a smear test - she needed diagnostic tests when she first reported her symptoms. She should NOT have been ignored until she was enrolled into the state programme.
Not just my personal opinion, folks; there are clinical guidelines in place for the management of symptoms in the under 25 because it was acknowledged that these women were routinely 'brushed off' and were being diagnosed far too late. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/436924/doh-guidelines-young-women.pdf
