Another thread on an incoming #IDP rookie in this 2021 class!
The 2nd Miami EDGE that I've watched — Jaelan Phillips.

- @PFF Big Board rank: 36
- 86.5 overall grade in 2020
- Played 2 years at UCLA before "retiring" due to health concerns

#Dynasty #FFIDP “West Coast”...
I started with the Clemson game because I wanted to see how he fared against the best competition…

And he definitely had some impact plays, including one of his 9 sacks on the year (good for 2nd in the ACC) against incoming No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence.
While it wasn't his best game of the year, Phillips did add 6 pressures in the Clemson game, including this one — winning with speed on the edge and then chasing down TL for the tackle short of the marker on 3rd down.
You see Phillips win a lot with speed, having 29 of his 42 total pressures (69%) come in 2.5 seconds or less.

Really just blows by a lot of tackles who struggle to slow him down in one-on-one matchups.
He doesn’t only win with just his speed though, as one of the things I noticed while watching was that he uses a variety of moves that help him win.

This move showed up a couple times: a very clean inside swim move to blow past the right tackle and get to the QB.
Phillips even utilized a sweet spin move against the right tackle in his first game with The U this year, causing a hurried throw by the QB and forcing an incompletion.

Phillips contributed 42 pressures for a 15.5% pressure rate, which was good for 7th in the ACC among EDGEs.
Already winning in a variety of ways, to me at least, gives me hope that he can be a very good pass rusher in the NFL.

He won 20.3% of his pass-rush reps, which was top-5 among ACC Edge defenders.

I really like that inside swim move...😍🏊‍♂️
One last look at how he can win — gotta pay attention closely to this one because it’s not really a great look at it.

Here he is lined up outside of the right tackle and stunts from his spot into the ‘A gap’ across the 2 right side offensive linemen, very quickly!
Plays the run well too, finishing the year with an 83.0 run defense grade.

He was one of only 7 edge rushers in the ACC (min. 100 snaps) who had an average depth of tackle that was less than 1 yard (0.77).

Good run defense is key to more opportunity early in his NFL career.
The health concerns are likely to drop him down some boards, as he’s been mocked as high as 9 to outside Rd. 1

Game-wrecking ability. Even in his only 2020 game where he had 0 pressures he had a huge pick
