I think a lot of people conceive human aesthetic beauty far more in terms of presentation than they do, the aspects of appearance that are physical, natural and immutable, which has always been strange to me. Are they just brainwashed by advertising, etc, etc?
Like, I’ve never understood why Kim Kardashian and other such people are considered to be beautiful — is it just social contagion? The media calls people like this beautiful and the people just accept it passively and their subjective experience is overwritten?
The way people talk and think about beauty has always confused me — the need people have to be seen as beautiful by as many people as possible, the fixation on beauty as something objective rather than subjective.
I used to have body dysmorphia in addition to my dysphoria, and it went away after enough people told me that I was beautiful — lol. I internalized that some people feel this way, and others won’t. It’s not something I think about at all anymore.
I think so much of what people respond to when they think they’re reacting to beauty is far more complicated — confidence I think very often is way more important, as is attention to detail, and the ever amorphous ‘taste.’
