Warning long thread...
At the start of the year I always ask my students what period of history they would like to live in or person they would invite to dinner.

And I just saw a post saying "the gays are lucky to have Sarah Paulson in their lifetime"

This got me thinking ...
Now I'm not OLD but I am probably older than you think.
When I grew up I knew not a single out actor/actress or IRL queer other than the stereotyped "sissy" caricature (liberace) and yes that included Elton & Freddy & Rock Hudson were so far in the closet they were in Narnia...
People forget just how hard and bad it was for Ellen when she came out and b4 Portia.
How there was only Melissa and KD out to look up to musically. When Jody had stalkers who killed to get her attention...
ALL the films and shows were literally killing the gays. Spoiler lesson, but bury your gays didn't start with Clexa.

So when I see Earpers I smile but also
I wish I had even 10% of gay today when I was younger.
To see Pete Buttigieg acknowledge Chasten today was brilliant.
...
And for Emily to develop this show of WynonnaEarp with Kat, Dom so able to be free to be themselves without backlash, to have Jody, Sarah and Holland, Kristen, Javicia, Ruby, Elliot, NatVan, Elise and so many others and shows.
Too many now to actually count. oh God what a list.
So seriously I would CHOOSE NOW as my time...
While any era can not be perfect, I am so thankful for all those MANY ACTIVISTS, gay, trans or bi who came before, and I think of what I can do to carry on the work.

I am not creative like some many queers artists I admire here &
I can't write but I love reading and consuming those who can - fanfic or not
So what can I do?

Simple...
Live my life openly with pride, no matter how "boring" it may be.
As a teacher I have queer students, some out, some not yet even though I can spot them a mile away....
So I know them and their fears and the importance of them seeing me at the front of the class having Wayhaught as my Screensaver on my projector.
I follow a few people here who are younger or still at school and they too inspire me.
They live with Kindness, Justice and Activism.
Pride is about to kick off here in Auckland NZ, so I just want to say thank you all and to celebrate that yes ...We are lucky to be alive at this moment in time.
Now who would I invite.. that's the 64 million $ question...
If you are still reading this long winded post - I did say I couldn't write - consider yourself invited ... just make sure your +1 is ... interesting
Or Kat, Jody or Dom or Katherine Hepburn Or Anne Lister or Jorja Fox or Billy Jean, Martina, or Emily or Virginia and Vita...
Ps I ain't ignore the men and their importance to gay history I just have not listed them cos I am a lesbian after all.
