At @WHO press conf @DrMikeRyan says WHO hasn't yet seen UK data suggesting that B.1.1.7 is more lethal (but these briefings happening simultaneously). He urges calm & says that a more contagious virus will be more lethal if it gets out of control & health systems are overwhelmed
"There is a big diff bw the lethality of a virus, how many people on average a virus kills, v the mortality," says @DrMikeRyan. "If I have 1m people infected & my lethality is 1%, or 2m people infected with a lethality of 1%, twice as many people will die [in 2nd case]"
. @mvankerkhove adds that there are positive signs that the measures in place in the UK (& elsewhere where B117 is prominent e.g. Demark) are reducing transmission. "We have to stay the course", she says. But reiterates that WHO is yet to see UK data on increased lethality

And as ever, I agree with @kakape - probably too soon for a conclusive answer either way: https://twitter.com/kakape/status/1352684916295819264
