I met up with some cousins today and one told me an interesting story.
She’d been on a date with a guy early last year and really enjoyed his company. He was very smart and interesting to talk to.
More recently they met up again when they found themselves in the same city.

She was really excited to see him as they’d gotten on so well last time. Specifically she mentioned they’d had good conversations.
So anyway, they started to chat and he starts coming out with a bunch of conspiracy-related nonsense. The usual stuff you’ve all heard.

He said that if Biden won the election, the Chinese Communist Party would be taking over America/Australia (can’t remember which). And a bunch of other far-right/QAnon garbage.
She was completely blindsided and horrified, having had normal conversations with him before.

My cousin is actually studying politics at university, so she began to politely correct him on a few points he’d made.
He said “I don’t believe you” to her. She was like, what do you mean you don’t believe me? These are facts. I learned them at university. It’s kind of my area.

He then proceeds to tell her that *all* the universities in Australia are owned by the CCP and so the “propaganda” was therefore filtering down to her that way. He informed her she was being brainwashed.
At this point she was so uncomfortable she left, halfway through dinner.

She heard nothing from him until the election results, when she got a text saying, “I bet you’re happy Biden won,” to which she replied in the affirmative. He then told her that Trump would be coming back. She said: “Well that’s a move Xi Jinping would be proud of.”

He didn’t respond to that.
The moral of the story? Not all QAnon folks are uneducated rubes. They are among us, and many “normal” people can be susceptible to its control. Even here in Australia. It’s genuinely frightening, and I’m not sure what the answer is. It’s a cult.
