Very exciting week, it was GCSE options evening and I had a wonderfully diverse & inclusive group of students saying they were interested in Computer Science. Over 40% were girls, which if they take the option will be a massive increase over the current cohort. @CompAtSch 1/4
I’d love to know what others are doing to improve diversity. Here’s what I’ve done. Took down all the posters of Computing’s past heroes, replaced with young innovators being celebrated now. All under 35 with mix of gender & ethnicity in different CS fields 2/4
I wanted to show different faces so students could see themselves represented. Every few lessons, I’d talk about their achievements. E.g. fighting racial bias in AI, creating cheaper prosthetics using 3D printers 3/4
I’ve tried to up social interaction, my seating plan is 2 girls/2 boys rather than boy/girl. Computing is such a social field, and I’ve been trying to get that across with working in pairs. I know they haven’t selected the option yet, but it’s encouraging
