Although Xamar is predominantly inhabited by the Hawiye clan, it is not founded by them as one may assume. For it was the Cisse Muuse sub clan to be the first Somalis to make contact with the city.
A group of Cisse Muuse clan members migrated with the leadership of Imam Ahmed Sacad Ismail and his sons (Diiriye, Gadiid and Cisman), south wards from the northern “Waqooyi” region to the “Shabeelaha Hoose” in the Benadir region.
The journey however was not easy, and conquering the land was even harder for the Cisse Muuse. For they had to fight several other insurgent groups.
The Cisse Muuse fought bravely against both the Portuguese and French to claim Xamar in a victory never seen before in 1486.
The European powers had never seen a group of Africans fight with such intelligence or vigour.

The Cisse Muuse were determined nevertheless to take the foreigners away from their country.
The ishaaq sub achieved impressive gains with a relatively low casualty rate, ending the skirmish within a week.

Xamar after Cisse muuse conquered it in 1487:
After living in peace they welcomed other clans to live amongst them.
Cisse Muuse had constructed exceptional housing and had offered the new settlers their services. However, the abgaal sub declined instead choosing to reside in mud huts 🛖

It seems the estranged sub of Hawiye failed to assimilate into civilisation.
They chose to live in the city’s peripheries. Due to their affinity towards agriculture and other menial tasks.
Whilst the Cisse Muuse established their dominance in the city. With their superb trading skills and entrepreneurship.
Unfortunately, much to the dismay of Cisse Muuse, Abgaal contact enabled the transmission of diseases, which caused unquantifiable devastation to southern Somalia. They had failed to domesticate them, ultimately leading to their downfall.
Abgaal took over due to their unhuman animalistic breeding rate. They established their huts and ruled a small portion of southern Somalia.
The shirib dance was made to emulate their rituals when making their traditional clan dish ‘ dirxi iyo cambuulo ‘ the excessive and repetitive jumps signify their feet crushing the worms on the floor whilst they razzmatazz and murmur sentences.
This has become a pinnacle aspect in abgaal culture.

- circa 1490 (abgaal offspring taking part in local traditions - big abdomens often signified wealth)
We shall not erase the rich history of the Cisse Muuse clan!
