it works in a legislative body but you can’t Manchin a general election https://twitter.com/briebriejoy/status/1352682244306071552
RCV is great but it’s just instant runoff! it doesn’t actually enable third parties, unless you’re assuming that the third party candidate is willing to secure a second place vote for a mainstream candidate. it creates some leverage but not all that much https://twitter.com/briebriejoy/status/1352683057380290571?s=21
purely electoral 3rd parties like MPP are inefficient. you weaponize the ballot line, you don’t center it, you treat elections as one tool in a much larger chest. we need a workers’ party. we need to connect ppl’s everyday struggle to political action outside the ballot box too https://twitter.com/briebriejoy/status/1352682667154808835
ultimately if you’re still centering the principle that voting is the primary point of political struggle, that’s just going to redound to the benefit of the people you’re trying to fight. this is not, btw, a dismissal of voter disenfranchisement as a serious issue.
not trying to put an ex-coworker on blast! but as someone who is active in DSA for four years, I really think this is missing the point
“yell at your congressperson” has its merits, but is not an innovative strategy it’s just bog-standard liberal democracy, we need to convince workers they have other channels to exercise power over their material conditions, and MPP doesn’t do that end rant
